Jurassic Park is a 1993 American science fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg. The screenplay was written by Michael Crichton and David Koepp. It was based on Crichton's 1990 novel of the same name, which won a Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1991 and also became the bestselling novel in history with nearly 22 million copies sold. A sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), was released in 1997; four further films followed in the Jurassic Park franchise, with varying degrees of critical and commercial success. The film stars Sam Neill as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant, Laura Dern as paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler, Richard Attenborough as John Hammond, Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm, Joseph Mazzello as Tim Murphy and Wayne Knight as Dr. Richard Levine. Supporting characters feature Richard Schiff, Martin Ferrero, Kenneth Welsh, Joseph Mazzello, David Hewlett, Ariana Richards and Samuel L. Jackson. Paleontologist Alan Grant works with paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler to establish a dinosaur theme park on the remote island of Isla Nublar. Testing the controllability of its genetically created reptiles leads to an incident that leads to the death of several park visitors and injuries to many others before special effects technician Tim Murphy saves them all with a hidden motorcycle. Armed forces and a team of experts are sent in to track down a flee containing the dinosaurs. The script for Jurassic Park was turned down by several Hollywood studios, before it was finally given a green light by Universal Pictures. The film's original budget of $63 million was well exceeded when the final costs came to $94 million. During production, Spielberg decided that the film would be best served by having a more experienced director take over for Johnston, who had been chosen as the director after Spielberg himself had been offered the job but declined due to his commitment with Schindler's List. Spielberg chose to stay on as a producer instead of director. The film was entirely shot on location in Kaua'i, Hawaii and at the Universal Studios Hollywood and Amblin Entertainment studio in Universal City, California. Production was delayed for two years after Hurricane Iniki devastated the island of Kauai in 1992, which required it to rebuild many structures and landscapes before filming could continue there. The film was released on May 9, 1993 to mixed reviews from critics but was a box office success. The film won three Academy Awards for its special effects and soundtrack: Best Sound Editing (Ramiro Belgardt), Best Sound Mixing (John T. Reitz, Gregg Rudloff, David E. Campbell and Greg P. Russell) and Best Visual Effects (Stan Winston, Dennis Muren and Michael Lantieri). The film also received two nominations: Best Adapted Screenplay (for Michael Crichton and David Koepp) and Best Original Score (James Horner). Plot: Two wealthy brothers, John and Hammond InGen executives intend to have a theme park populated by cloned dinosaurs on Isla Nublar, a remote island off Central America's Pacific coast. They hire paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant who specializes in studying dinosaurs from their fossilized remains to assess the park site before it is opened to the public.
